Destination One: Middle of Nowhere

I have made it to Nyah (middle-of-nowhere) West, Victoria and have started at my carrot gig on the family organic farm, Arahura, it’s tripled in size since I was last here and is now kinda a big deal.

My job along with other travelers has been sorting the ugly carrots and packing, riveting stuff. I can proudly say that after 3 days I on longer make gutter-mind jokes about the shapes if carrots… to myself. I’ll fill you in a bit more on the inner workings of Arahura in another post don’t you worry.

On my arrival I was instant town favourite to my cousin’s children Jorja 6, Kyra 4, and Reuben 3. They had the pleasure of picking me up from the bus stop with their mum, the ability to never tire and the knack to all talk at once. Below I am drawing a pink Giraffe, incredibly rare in the wild and the current location of this drawing is unknown.

Meeting the kids

Until today I was yet to break the language barrier with my peers. Myself and a English woman are the only native English speakers so I was unsure;
a) if I had friends as they reverted back to Taiwanese/Italian/German/Mandarin/Korean/Japanese straight after talking to me
b) whether my hilarious jokes would fly
Never the less today I had a break through, I made friends!!!! The Italians invited me back to the caravan park (where all the travellers stay) to party! This is somewhat of an achievement as apparently they’re pretty exclusive according to the English woman but I had family dinner so could not attend the aforementioned partay. They also play old school Eminem, so it was fate.

In other short news:
– Grandma referred to her new flooring as “N*gga Brown” ha! old people.
– I wish I’d fake tanned, so white!
– I have been asked whether I’m Canadian and British.
– I don’t know what they do in a Men’s Shed but I intend to learn.
– It’s going to be 39 degrees here tomorrow.

Carrots aren’t that interesting, though they’re crazy delicious, so the rest of my posts for the next 3 weeks are going to be puns and I don’t carrot all. I also do not have internet at grandmas**.

I will leave you with images of Nyah West and it’s 3 functioning shops. The IGA (supermarket) sells 5L goon, so I may have to investigate that.

Nyah shops

Nyah West township, you’re forgiven if you thought this was from an old western.

Men's shed

The local men’s shed.

*Learning’s:  A men’s shed is basically where men go to socialize without drinking during the day and they also construct things for the community, for example, my Grandma’s shelves. It is also used to provide them with a support network to help prevent suicides, as the rates are high for men in rural areas.

**Post-published note: The farm office has internet and Grandma lives 20 meters away so posts will be semi-regular.
